Research shows that spitfire 1500's did come with 1 1/2 inch hs4's in the european version.(teglerizers site)The pix don't really show the intake openings so a guy could see if they are the same as the MG ones. The linkages would probably be a different length?
Anyone got any helpfull info? I am looking at these with interest and would appreciate the input. Thanks Mark

Just got a message from seller...they are 78 vintage.off a 78 triumph spitfire 1500.Probably the spring loaded needles I presume. M

Hi
You may want to talk to John at https://www.quantumechanics.com/index.php

I bought a set of the carbs I think you are talking about and the matching euro exhaust manifold for my Spitfire, which is not on the road yet.
There is info on the website I attached.
I had Joe Curto rebuild the carbs and remove the thermostatic jets.

The car (Spitfire) came to me with a 1500 MG engine installed. I have since found a Triumph numbered one and have the MG numbered sitting out of the car. Both engines have the manifolds off right now.

Are these what you are looking for?

Mark

Hi Norton47

Thanks for the reply and info link. I am looking for an early set of hs4 carbs and just thought that these ones on ebay might be in my ballpark.I was hoping they would be the early ones(around 67 or so),but I will read up on these newer ones and see if mabey they still would be better than my hif4's.
The thermostatic jets you mention getting removed have me concerned as it sounds a bit like the bi metalic jet supports that the hifs have that I think cause all my trouble with them.
take care and thanks again Mark

The SU carb body for the MG and Spitfire conversion are the same I do believe. The Spitfire carb uses a different float chamber. I am going with MG carbs on my Spit and talked with Joe Curto before i ordered all the parts. As long as you have the linkage fittings, you can buy shaft stock and cut it to fit.

BTW I bought my carbs from Hap.

The waxstat jets are pretty simple to replace.

Thanks for that info bill. How do the waxstat jets work (theoretically)? They must be a temperature/mixture compensating arrangment i would imagine? Do they actually work or are they a problem?I had not even heard of them . :lol:I thought that they just stopped making the hs's when the style on the MG's switched to the integrated floatbowls.
I may just hold out for some older carbs,it's all but winter up here now anyway.

take care all....Mark

I have no idea how the waxstats work, or are supposed to work. As i understand they don't. I also think they stopped making the HS carb when they started making the HIF carb. Also, the car companies went with the Zenith Stromberg as it was more emissions friendly than the SU.

Hi All;

Here is a bit of an update for anyone who is interested.
You can get conversion kits for Waxstat type hs4 Carbs throught the minimania people at
https://www.minimania.com/web/Item/CSK65A/InvDetail.cfm

This is another way to deal with the waxstats and it involves stacking pennies... :cooler:

https://home.mindspring.com/~purlawson/files/SU_Waxstat_Jet_Tube_Conversion.pdf.

I stayed away from those ones I found on E-bay anyway but my curiosity got me on those waxstat jets.

Take Care Mark
