"on the new 6 cylinder BMW petrol engine the cyl blocks are made out of magnesium and all the bolts that screw into them are alloy and must only ever be used once. If steel bolts are fitted then the block with crumble and disappear around the bolt hole i can see a few disaster in the future regarding this!!"

Well they must have changed the magnesium makeup from days of old. The old aircooled vw's early 70's were magnesium case. Notorious for pulling the studs out of the case.

But factory and aftermarket fix was installed a helicoil type insert(casesaver).. Which was made of steel.

Don't know of any that pulled the studs after the repair. And steel was used in a few other places on the cases without problems, oil pump mounting, etc. Boy those old engines would make a nice blue flame when we were out in the desert(Glamis) on a weekend, dunebuggying....

Mercedes has gone to an alloy that I suspect is magnesium because it is crumbline easily, like the BMW valve covers.. MB denies any problem, but I've already seen threee engines here on Oahu that disintegrate just looking at them...
