Engine Swap

Rebuilding a 72 spitfire into a spit 6 and it is now motor time. I have a disassembled mkIII gt6 engine waiting for me to have enough money to get it machined. I however just found what I feel is a really good deal on a running gt6 engine on ebay. First question its from a mk1 gt6 will it fit in my later frame with my late model transmission. Question two is the mk1 engine worth me scrapping the mk3 engine provided it will fit?

The early GT6 engine will fit as well as the MkIII one will. However, I hope that "late model transmission" is a GT6 one, or it won't work with either six.

As to which GT6 engine is better, overall the MkIII engine has the advantage of a better head, but depending on vintage, it might have the disadvantages of being an "emissions" engine. That's not a problem if you plan to rebuild. The early "Mk1" engine is ok (and the original heads aren't all that bad), but it would help to know the engine serial number, as the earliest GT6 engines used some different internals (especially bearings and such), and they might be a bit harder to find than those for the later ones.
