MGB Engine surprize

I was released from jury duty earlier than expected and drove around for awhile in city and highway traffic enjoying the sounds of my newly rebuilt engine. Once home I decided to check the torque of the head and rocker bolts, re torque actually, and was surprised to find that they took between an additional 7-10 ft pounds to reach 45 on the ARP studs, and 5+ pounds to reach 25 on the rocker studs. Once re torqued I set the valves to .018/.020 intake/exhaust per APT specs for the VP12 cam. The engines been running great and it's very strong with a gentle lope at idle (1200 rpm) and will pull away from rest going uphill just letting the clutch out...very happy with the performance! After retorqueing and valve adjustment the performance is decidedly better and it pulls to redline much easier than before...it's also much smoother and the gentle lope at idle is even more gentle.
I've never experienced this kind of improvement from a head retorqueing or a valve adjustment and wondered if this is common? Has anyone else experienced this?

no idea about the performance but, glad it is running smoothly and well! congrats

I run a VP-11 because I was living in L.A. and needed good idle in unrelenting traffic. If you haven't already - either send your dizzy to Jeff to have it curved for the VP-12 or someone you trust to curve it. BIG difference.

Max,
My dizzy was built by Jeff and it really works well with the engine mods I've got. Hap Waldrop did a great job of putting together parts that work well with each other and the car is a pleasure to drive. I'm in the process of building the 1275 for my Bugeye and Hap did the kit for that as well...next up is a TR4a and I'll go the same route.
