Engine Stand Mounting

I just took possession of an engine that was removed from a BJ8. The engine was supposedly running as recently as last fall. I am planning on freshening up this engine, and then removing my tired, original BJ7 engine for a complete re-build. This BJ8 engine will be installed to keep me on the road during the original engine re-build.
Having no prior experience with this type of engine, what is the best method for mounting the engine to my engine stand? It appears as though removing the flywheel and using the rear engine mounting plate bolts would be an option, but I am looking for any advice. Thanks.

I was told in no uncertain terms by some very experienced people to rig up brackets to hold the engine by its side, not by the end.

I mounted mine by the side. Everything is easier to get to without having the mounts on the end. It is a little more stable on the stand also. Depending on the stand mounting setup, put them as wide apart as you can, using the engine mount holes, tappet bolt holes or any others that are available.

I must say that the thought of holding that lump at one end would give me concern too, I have given the idea some thought in the recent past as one day I will need to attend to my engine, and the jury is still out on that one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Is not mounting the engine on a stand from the end a safety item or can it cause damage to the engine or mounting plate? I have had mine mounted by the end for the last few months.

I`m with you Charlie I am rebuilding my engine and when I saw this I hustled out to the shop and took it off the stand and but it on a table. Skip

Dunno - Charlie. Think it is a matter of safety, working convenience, & bending the engine plate.
