Engine (1275) runs rough then die's while at stop sign.

Hey Fellas, I have a small problem, after fixing the over-heating dilemma I noticed that the engine runs really rough while idling. It runs so rough that if left alone (with out any addition of choke or gas) the engine will quit. This problem happens a lot more when the engine is warmed up, like after driving around and stopping at a four way intersection. After sitting there in the car trying to restart for a minute or two the people behind me started to get really angry :^). When it would not restart, I let sit on the side of the road for 5 minutes after such time it started right up again, this happened twice within 20min both places with a pile up of cars behind me, hahaha.

I believe that the engine is running too rich, not absolutely sure though.

It has an electronic Ignition (Crane XR700), so I’m not worried about incorrect timing or lack of spark. I did take a look at the spark plugs though and they seem to be covered with unburned fuel. Take a look:

Also, I don’t know why but the DPO decided to get rid of the PVC system with all of its hoses cut out and blocked off with bolts.

What do you guys think?
 
I would expect too rich as well. In fact very very rich.

Emision stuff was removed so the little engine could sing.

Adjust the carbs properly.
 
Generally, engine cutting out means fuel delivery problem. Is fuel pump ok? First thing I would do is reset the idle, then move onto the jets. See if that works. If not, move onto fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel lines.

Other things to check are:
1/ How sloppy are the throttle butterflies?
2/ Are you actually getting spark? Often when a coil is going bad it will exhibit your symptoms.
3/ Spark wires? Same as above.

No no guys, look at the spark plugs, very very rich. It is chokeing out at idle unless he clears it.

I hope you realize that, even with the Crane, you still need to time it correctly.

I agree, however, that the main problem is very likely to be carb adjustment--too rich. But if the timing is off, that certainly won't help.
 
Did this problem just start, or has it been ongoing? Confirm that timing is properly set. Also, confirm that the choke is fully returning to no choke when you push in the knob. I had a jet start hanging up on one carb and it exhibited the same characteristics that you are experiencing. I pushed the choke knob in all the way and pushed up on the bottom of the jets. If the jets move up when you push them up, the choke is not fully returning. By the way, do your dampers rise and fall as they should?
 
sorry...I gotta say it...then stay away from stop signs!!!
