Engine rebuild starts today.

I'm sure this will be the first of many questions. I got the motor back from the machine shop for my 64 TR4 yesterday and I'm going to be putting it all back together starting today. I've got the rotating assembly in (pistons, cam, and crank) but I'm not sure what the manual means about jointing compound when putting the front sealing block back in. Is that just blue RTV?

I'd choose Hylomar.

I used the Wellseal stuff from Moss when doing my TR3 engine. I used it just about everywhere. Expensive, but more then enough in the tube for a complete engine. I like it because it doesn't harden, so if you have to pull something back off, it won't wreck the gasket.

Same with Hylomar, Art. And it's a Permatex product so may be found locally. Wellseal is fine too.

RTV is evil! Don't use it anywhere inside your engine! If you don't get just exactly enough and not too much, it oozes out inside where you can't see it, which can later break off into 'strings' that can float around until they block a critical passage.

I like Hylomar in most places (Permatex Aviation in just a few, like the rear main felts and Fo8 gaskets), but Wellseal is fine too.

Randall, you're my hero.

:wink: :jester:

I am a big fan of the Hylomar, that's what I'll use then. Had to actually pickup a "new" sealing block off ebay, so once I have it, I can move ahead with getting that installed.

Hey Doug,
Picked up my block today & will get the rest of
the stuff next week. This'll be my first tr engine;
so will be reading with interest on how you fair.
Good luck on it !
Harry

Thanks Harry, I'm progressing albeit slowly on my rebuild. I've never put a motor back together before so it's a learning experience.

I've managed to get the rotating assembly in as well as the timing gear and chain. I've also sort of gotten the oil sump and distributor drive shaft and gear in. DM me if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

Good luck.
