engine rebuild comleted

Offline
gents, got a call friday from don scinto in stratford ct. that my engine rebuild was completed total cost was $4100.00 that price reflects machine work and all new parts as well, i have a chance to "dyno" the engine while its still out of the car at dons shop he will charge an additional $300.00 for the dyno run/runs my thinking is 1-id hate to install the engine and have it "granade" (thanks ronmacpherson for that term) then have to pull it again take it back to him etc, etc, 2- if the thing does go south he cant blame me for not breaking it in properly etc, etc. i will have to bring him the intake, carbs, bell housing exhaust manifold, ignition etc, about a 40 min. ride but wont mind doing that and at this point the extra few bucks is no biggy, 3- id like the print outs of said run/runs to show every one that you can get 500+ h.p. out of these engines, /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif what ya think? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

Anthony,

Is the dyno run for base-lining the output of the engine or is he going to fine tune all of the components? If you are dyno-ing the engine just for knowing how it performs out of a rebuild, then … I, personally, would not do it. You want to dyno and tune at the same time. Fix anything that needs fixing and get the best performance that the engine will give you based on the building you did. If you do find any problems, they are easier to fix with the engine on a stand and not in the car.

You won’t get much break-in of the engine during a dyno session since you are not spending a lot of time running. Any grenading of parts may not happen until you are further down the line and running it in the car. The only grenading that you might see would be do to improper assembly (like blocked oil passages) or some very weak parts.

As far as horsepower, I have seen them make 550 HP. But, you had to chrome the rocker cover…

marka, the tuning is part of what im interested in here, its much easier to tweek the entire engine while on the stand i.e the su's and i can run the engine for several hours so the cam break in period (cam reground to bj8 specks) would be achieved and as you mention any component failure is much easier to address while the engine is out of the car, i know several individuals that have spent well above $6000,00 for a standard rebuild and had the head gasket pop after the engine had been installed, but in this instance the money i spent for what i got is a matter of who ya know. if anything goes wrong i want it to happen while the beast is out of the engine compartment. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

Anthony,

Also a good way to see if everything is sealed up tight. Much easier to see any problems on a stand than in the car. Not that British cars have any problems with leaks. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif

I wanted my motor guy to run it in on a stand first but after waiting 6 months for him to put it together, didn't want to wait another 6 months for him to run it on a stand! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif

Anyway, the motor is back home and I'm prepping it for painting. The restoration continues ...

john, thats good news, i know what ya mean about the waiting but i was adamant that my guy took his time no rush its been about 5 months now and ive gotten so that i get a hot panty flash if i as much hear an old porsche drive by. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cry.gif

$300 is cheep to just get the print-out of torque and Hp vs. RPM. I would like to see the results. Not allot is going to happen in 40 min. Where are these stories coming from about 500HP? I had to install 5PSI of boost to get over 500HP in a BBC.

I'm by far not an expert on rebuilding engines. But, I would be concerned that the engine is being run excessively on a stand without anykind of a "load". If your just wondering if the motor would run at all I think it's a waste of money. Any motor rebuilder can verify there work by checking the motor without running it. Compression checks etc. If the costs include tuning yes, it might be worth it, but again, it should be done with a load on the engine. Just my Opinion.

johnny, hello,i agree with you in that "free spooling" an engine for break in purposes at high r.p.m might not be the ideal method however the reason to do this on a "dyno" is that tourque and horse power are determined by putting a load on the engine, and doing this will also provide an oppertunity to fine tune before installation. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif
