Engine Re-assembly

ok,

after reading some posts on gasket sealer, i thought i'd start my post on re-assembly tips and tricks. now i've read my three triumph manuals but i'd love to hear from the guys that do it on a regular basis.

it's a gt6 by the way, but what are some of the things to watch out for and make sure i do while reassembling?

a few i have is the procedure and products i need for gaskets and lube.

so shoot off the tips, i know you all have them.
 
Surgical cleanliness above all. The smallest piece of grit in the wrong place will destroy a bearing. Detergent & hot water is not going too far. Especially if the cylinder bores have been honed. I've scrubbed more than one block & crank in the bath tub. Not lately though, have to do it in the shop now.

Use long handled brushes to scrub ALL drilled or cast oil passages, before putting their plugs in. Also all crankshaft oil ways. Nylon rifle or shotgun barrel cleaning brushes work well.

Wipe the bores dry after washing, with a very clean, lightly oiled paper towel. Any color showing on the towel, do it again. Silicon spray lube works well as a temporary rust preventive.

Check ALL bearing clearances, ring to piston fits & ring end gaps. A good shop will fit the bores to each individual piston when they hone the block. Don't mix them up.

Use good cam break in lube on the cam & lifters. Check cam & all lifters for a hardness of RC55 or better.

Shim all valve springs to their proper height. Verify valve stem heights.

Set cam to crankshaft timing with a degree wheel & dial indicator. Set to the cam manufacturers timing specs.

Check valve to piston clearances as the crankshaft is carefully turned. A bit of clay on the piston tops will indent at the valve locations & can be measured for thickness. Usually about .070" minimum.

This is a few of the high points. It goes on & on if you want maximum life & power out of the engine. A bit much to cover in a forum post.

You could skip most of this, get lucky, & have a good engine - but maybe not. A bad place to cut corners if youhave a lot of bucks in engine parts.
