alrighty...
i was driving home just then, finished work at 12 midnight, was driving home... overtaking someone then poof i knowtest a big puff of smoke behind the mg, seemed to run rough as guts til i pulled into the service station.

I checked it out, just thought one or two of my leads might have jumped off the dizzy... all fine... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif it seems whenever i put my foot down on the accellerator the car makes a pinging sound, a loud TAT TAT TAT TAT TAT, only on throttle tho, down gearing, nothing...

Im gonna take it to the mechanic tomorrow to get it checked out, any ideas guys?

blown head gasket maybe? I realize it was dark, but could you tell what color the smoke was, and did you notice any 'new' smells at the time that it happened? Those two observations can go along way in determining what 'blew'.

From my vast experience at blowing engines as a kid - most likely a head gasket or a hole in a piston (could be valves also, but never had that happen to me). Good luck!

Jack,
Of the things mentioned so far, replacing a valve spring would be the very easiest thing to do. Shouldn't even have to remove the head. I would hope that it IS "that"

You might want to pull the plugs and run a compression test before taking it to the mech. Never hurts to be able to say that you have done those things and you might even come up with the answer yourself!

heya guys...
friday, my dad came over to check out the B,
he did a bit of playing around, recons its the head gasket, a blowout between cyl 3-4.
only 1&2 are firing.

My car had a headjob prob less than 18 months ago... it seems strange that the head gasket has already gone /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
My dad mentioned that when u getta headjob done, they should re-tighten up the head about 1000kms after.
My OLD mechanics didnt do this... they didnt even tell me about it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
U recon that could have been why?

If there are any victorian ppl on these forums, email me and i'll tell u what mechanics NOT TO GOTO!
(I wont blast them over the net publicly, im sure they'r down the shitter enough as it is)
I've had nothing but problems from this mob... good thing my newer mechanics has a bloddy clue what he's doing.

So, ill take the B to the mechanic after easter, in the meantime, im stuck with driving my dads old raised 4wd.
Its a yellow Toyota 4Runner, raised to a stupid height (so dangerous on the corners)

Well, if it was one of those non-reinforced paper head gaskets, then it doesn't supprise me too much at all. The head gaskets that I've used on other cars had metal reinforcement around all the holes. I believe either Bit-Tek, Moss, or VB (i forget which catalogue I saw it in) sells an solid copper (or was it brass?) head gasket as an "up rated" unit for the 'B engine. Might be something to ask about if your new mech doesn't give you the option.

Jerrod, my man, I think you are lucky!

Of all the screw ups the OLD mechanics could have done, a head gasket replacement beats a lot of others. And to have a dad available to diagnose and offer a loaner, even if it is a "hopped up tractor" (what my dad called my Jeep years ago" is cool. When my son's Jeep acts up (which is more ofen than my B) I don't loan him the B...he gets to borrow the old Buick my late mother drove to church every Sunday...and the the liquer store every Saturday LOL

Anyhow, I digress...glad you found the problem and have a relatively easy fix...good luck!

Hey guys, got the G towed to the mechanic...
He checked it all out and gave me a buzz this morning.
It was a blown head gasket... between 3/4 cyl just as my dad thought...

Engine rebuild $3000, Rebuilt Carbies $300, Rebuilt dizzy $300, Blown head gasket $700, Driving THIS 4*4 through the showroom of these SHITS Workshop... PRICELESS!!!!!

Do yourself a favor and have them chek out the radiator and hoses now...a third blown head gasket is a crying shame.

Radford... i think i will check over the radiator ASAP, maybe even replace it...

Alrighty, just got off the phone to the mechanic...
theres no damage to the head itself *phewwwwwwwwww*
BUT...

My exhaust valves apparently are CRAPPED... he says its either they are really old, or its coz of crappy petrol... I cant understand why coz this was all done when i got the head rebuilt and since then ive ONLY EVER put in high octane unleaded petrol :S

Jesus this MG mob should be shut down, this is so poor, not to mention bloddy illegal, replacing feked parts with less feked parts... WTF!?!?!

LOL

Anyways guys... i guess im learning alot about cars ey!! :p
