Engine playing up

Looking for bright ideas here.

BJ7 with HS6 carbs

The engine starts when cold and will not tick over but runs at 1500 - 2000 revs when stationary at the lights, tried dropping the revs using the screw adjustment and then the engine cuts right out at lower revs.

Once hot, the engine will not restart until it cools down to 160 or less.

Any ideas?

vacuum leak??

I'm afraid you'll have to go back to basics. Check advance, plugs, points, HT cables, condenser and coil. If all Ok then start the process of retuning the SUs as per the manual. Inability to start when hot is usually a sign of an electrical problem.

An update on the situation.

The dizzy is a DM6A on my old girl and it is in need of some TLC, the earth cable from the body to the condenser was shot, a PO had cobbled something together that was too short and not very flexible, as a result it had parted company with the connector at one end. On top of that the ' three fingered sprung clamp' holding the base plates together has one of the 'fingers' broken off, it was lying in the dizzy. I am currently trying to source the necessary to put it all back together. It may not be the total problem, but one thing is sure - these problems were not helping the situation.

Update - just acquired the complete back plate - sorted the wires out and have rebuilt the Dizzy - need to put it into the car and see if that sorts my problem out.

The problem was with the Dizzy, just dropped it in this morning and she fired up second time having stood idle for the thick end of 5 days, later she fired up first time. It's raining now and the catering management is calling so I cannot take her out for a run and get her hot just to see if it starts when the temperature is up.

I am however confident that the problem has been resolved.
