I bought an Austin Healey 1967 but the engine plate number is missing. Do you know the engine number corresponding to the body number HBJ8L / 37530 ?

Thank you Jaghion

Email BMHIT in the uk and they can send you a heritage certificate with all the numbers on . Its NOT free though .

Jaghion, it is most unfortunate, but if the engine serial number plate is missing from your car, there is absolutely no way you can be sure that the engine in the car is the one that was in it when it left the factory. It is very common for BJ8s to have had their engines replaced in the last 50 years, and very common for engines to be missing their serial number plates. Typically, this means that the engine has been rebuilt and cleaned in a hot tank without first removing the serial number plate. It will dissolve in the cleaning chemicals. There is no other place on the engine where the serial number was marked. There are also any number of other reasons why a plate could be missing.
As the keeper of the BJ8 Registry for the last 20 years, I never recommend anyone replace a missing tag by having one made with the number printed on the BMIHT certificate. That would make it entirely possible that two engines will be claiming the same serial number. Too many sellers have been able to claim "matching numbers" by replacing plates.

By the way, HBJ8L/37530 is the Car Number (or Vehicle Identification Number - VIN), not the body number. The body number is stamped on a plain aluminum tag attached to the top center of the firewall with two screws. Please contact me at sbyers@ec.rr.com and we can continue the discussion of your car. I do have HBJ8L/37530 included in the BJ8 Registry out of Dobbs Ferry, NY.

The engine number plates also have a habit of rotting away at the rivits and falling off . My 62 Tri carb engine was barely hanging on but there was sufficient info on it for me to get a new one made from clark spares . This could be the case or possibly like Steve said the not so smart engine cleaner guy dropped it in the tank before removing it .
Look and see if there are stubs of rivits sticking out of the block or if they are gone and this may give you a clue as to the blocks history .
