hi to all,
having recently joined,i am hopeing you might shed some light on a problem ?. my mg midget 1500cc has a habit of growling in all the gears when you put your foot down but it is more noticable in 1st,second ,and third gear. i set the tappets last night and at tick over its smooth ,you can rev it in neutral and no growl but as soon as you get going in gear above 2500rpm this growl comes in?theres no banging or slapping so i'm wondering if its in the gearbox cos theres plenty of power put the boot down and it goes
has anybody else encountered a similar problem ?

Have you checked your gearbox oil level
Sometimes that single ZS air filter cover can vibarte and make a similar sound if not tight?

A growl (as opposed to a rattle) makes me wonder if there is a bearing issue.

Regularman,
That was so wisely said!!
that was just plain funny!

you can rev it in neutral and no noise very smooth sounding but as soon as you put it in gear and rev it beyond 2000rpm it starts to make a noise

Can you give us an idea of where you think it is coming from? Have you checked your U-joints.

Does the clutch action make any other noises when depressed while idling (change in engine speed maybe)?

How about out of gear coasting at 55 MPH.
