Engine Noise

'74 Midget - has a loud rapping noise under acceleration. Thought it was the speedo cable, but after replacing it and the pinion gear the noise is still there. Doesn't do it when you let off the gas, but only on acceleration at speeds of 20-30 mph or more. Any help would be greatly appreciated. this forum has helped me solve many problems before and I hope you can come through again. Thanks in advance.

Down in tunnel area?? Might think about a U joint.

The noise is in the tunnel area and I have not checked the drive shaft. Will look at this evening for any play in it. Any other specifics I should look for?

Thats it, will prob have to pull drive shaft to check front U joint but then that's only four bolts at the rear of the shaft.

Think about how long they been on there.

If I shift rapidly from 1st to 2nd, I get a similar noise and a wee bit of a clunk, same diagnosis?

Maybe and maybe not.

If it only does this on fast shifts, it is probably 2nd gear syncro.
Solution: shift slower (or remove trans and rebuild everything) Weak syncros can last a long time without hurting anything if you shift carefully.
As with any trans problem, you should change trans oil more often in case there are metal chips in there...it's easy and cheap (your car uses motor oil in the trans).
As for the clunk, it may be a loose U-joint or motor mount. Raise the rear of the car off the ground (not on the pumpkin) and see if there is any slop in the front or rear U-joint.

If the choice is shifting slower (I usually do), changing oil or rebuilding the transmission. I'll take prevention, U joints are relatively cheap I think I can manage changing them all right. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't my transmission, if after doing the above it still makes a clunk, I'll add the tranny to the list of things coming out this winter....Thanks.
