Engine noise

I have an engine noise that I am not sure of... It is a squeal like a fan-belt noise and it only happens when I let off of the gas. When the engine is accelerating (loaded), the squeal stops. It is not the alternator belt and the air pump is as tight as I can get it. I can't locate the source. The noise is there if the clutch is engaged OR dis-engaged, at idle or moving... but only when I let off the gas.

Remove both belts and go for a short ride. If the problem goes away, at least you've isolated the sub-systems affected. With the belts off, try spinning the air pump and alternator by hand and see if you can feel any glitches. Sometime a bad bearing will only show up when it's unloaded, ie under de-cel. If the problem went away after step one, and step two doesn't show anything, re-install one of the belts and go for another ride.Repeat with the other belt if needed. I know it sounds like a pain in the posterior, but it's a start. Remember what Robert Earl Keen said. "The road goes on forever but the party never ends".
