MGB-GT Engine noise question - 67 BGT

Now I have the engine started I have noticed that when you lift off the gas, there is a humming noise comming from somewhere. Revs up strongly but there is definately a strange noise when you lift off as the engine slows back down. Does this even in neutral when the car is not moving. It is kind of hard to describe a noise but any ideas??

Do the fan blades flex a little or a lot? There are rubber grommets that allow them a little flex. Taking a stab at it, but if they are too loose maybe they are causing the hum.

Those grommets can do some strange things with regard to noises. Had an occasion where they were worn thru and the noise would appear on throttle-up, sounding EXACTLY like rod knock.

Other "suspects" may be a loose fan belt (don't OVER tighten it, either), water pump bearing or loose generator mount bolts.

Rule out clutch release bearing by depressing clutch and see if noise disappears under otherwise same circumstances.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Hopefully I will have time to look at it tonight and will let you know what I find out.

Take the belt right off the engine and run it (briefly!) to see if the noise disappears.

Way to go Doc - and a huge Thank You as well. I loosened the belt a hair figuring that it was the easiest, and the noise has gone.

:thankyousign:

*blush* awww.... geee. Pleased to be of service.

As me twin brother Mickey says: "Even a blind squirrel..."

Glad it was something external. And to know ya found it.
