engine mounts

I will need to install new rear engine mounts. Can they be removed and replaced by just taking the weight of the engine/tranny on a floor jack or must the engine be lifted slightly with a hoist? Haynes says do it with a hoist but??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nopity.gif

Guinn, just take a block of wood and put it on your jack were the engine and transmittion connect and take a bit of weight off the mounts, after getting them loose you can jack it up a little more, then I normally take a bar to pry the engine enough to get the old mount out on one side, replace it and put the nuts and bolts on then go to the other side and do the same. Once both are done jack the engine up just a little so you can center the weight of the motor by rocking it slightly. Now at no time use brut force or get your fingers between the motor and the mounts, if the jack fails (and they do) you will get hurt. Do not try this with a scissor jack. Wayne

Thanks, Wayne. Will print it out, even though I thought this was the way to go (kinda). Never thought to pry the engine over like that.
