engine ID number confusion

in the moss catalog they show the engine ID number as being on the right side of the block for a 100-4. that's the number i used for my heritage certificate. so then, what is the number stamped into the plate rivited to the top of the block, just in front of the head?

Tim--

The number plate that is rivetted to the block just alongside the head on the right side of the engine is the only number plate on the engine--that number (minus the M suffix)should match your car number which may be found in one of a few places depending on when your car was made but very likely in the driver's foot well. The number plate on the firewall is the batch/body number.
