Engine hoist...

I like the hydraulic hoists my self. Handy ,rollable, and versatile. A must for larger car and truck engines and or engine/trans. combos. Many times it's easier to pull the engine and trans. as a unit, thus the need for more carrying capacity. If all you plan on lifting is a tiny midget motor what you plan should work but in the interest of safety I would attach, with long lag bolts, a taller piece of wood or metal to the inside of the plates above the door jamb head piece, strange that there is no large header beam there.. We used to pull Mini motor/trans. with just a piece of pipe. But we were 200 lb+ bruisers. I remember times when we were lifting the front wheels off of the ground as we had forgotten to unbolt something. Ahh youth. The thing to keep foremost in mind is safety. Flimsy arrangements can flex or worse under load and pin or destroy both auto parts and or your parts in a jiffy costing you more than the price of a new hoist or a used hoist from craigslist or such. Many times they are referred to as "cherry pickers' in the ads. Plenty of folks want rid of them so they sell them cheap. They do unbolt completely and will store this way in a smaller spot if needed. Plus, they come in handy for other uses such as pulling fence posts, lifting heavy things, etc. If working outside on the dirt, source a couple of lengths of wide steel channel for the wheels to roll upon That's my 14 cents worth, --elrey

THAT's why my body is giving me fits today... we were keeping up with YOU guys back-when. sheesh. :jester:

I know where yer comin' from there. It's gotten to the point that bending over to adjust my valves requires a week-long recovery period. :hammer: -->

I have a double (16 ft) garage door with 3 2x12s for header. I got a piece of 2x2 angle iron and attached it to the inside face of the header with 2 5 inch lag bolts. Hook the chain hoist onto that and it easily lifts an A series motor. I first used it to lift the back of herself's VW for dropping the motor. Plenty strong.

That's not what my doctor said it was when he told me to bend over - same recovery though. :cryin:
