Today I was looking around the engine compartment and noticed that i had several wires that the insulation is cracked. I was going to start checking connections. I noticed that the insulation is real brittle and cracks easily. Now I'm wondering if I should just replace the Engine harness. I do not want a lot of shorts. I've changed or repaired harnesses on Honda(s), so a MG can't be any harder. Does Moss and VB supply good harnesses? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks Bob
 
BB: Not an MG guy, but I'll mention that replacing the harness on my TR3 was one of the nicest things I ever did for myself. Mine came from Moss but have heard that perhaps several vendors use the same source.
 
IF you're not currently having problems, I'd leave it be. Others may disagree. Regardless, you can count on fixing it at some point.
The part that confused me was "engine harness"... I'm not remembering MGs having a separate harness up there for the engine... pretty much all ties in together, with a few exceptions.

Anwyay, sooner or later you'll need one, and when you do, British Wiring is the place to go.
 
Baxter...depends - some MG's had a separate front harness, dash harness, & rear harness....some had just a main harness & rear harness...believe it was around 76 or 77 that they put a commector behind the dash & separated the dash harness from the main (engine) harness
 
Yup, knew about the dash harness. Can't remember when they came in. Something tells me '72, but I wouldn't bet on that. You may be right with '77. Just couldn't remember a separate harness for the engine bay.
 
Just looking at the harness it appears to be a engine bay harness that connects into a harnness that runs underneath to the rear of the car. I hope thats correct. I also hope the engine bay and dash harness are seperate. Bob
 
Well, no. The "engine" harness may incorporate the dash, or just run along the dash and feed into it. Either way, you're under the dash. There is also the rear harness that connects in the engine bay on the passenger side along the firewall.

I got the new harness and found that the Dash harness and engine harness are connected. That ok, because now i will be taking out the dash and correcting the DPO handy work. I went ahead and ordered the rest of the harnesses for the car. I will replace the harnesses as i have time. Plan on recovering the dash while its out. Will also look around the fire wall and see what else needs done. Bob
 
Seems like when I start doing one thing to the car I see other things that I have to do or want to do. Is this an illness or just part of the fun of driving a LBC? Bob

If it was me, I would be ordering a new one from British Wiring!! I would also let them know what happened to my old one because they may have some value for the old one!!! GOOD LUCK!!!! OH!!!! The harness itself goes in real easy!!!

And I checked. Moss does not sell British Wiring harnesses. They sell another "Made in England" product (who might also sell to British Wiring for all I know!). How many loom makers can that country support? They aren't even as big as Oregon!
 
British Wiring makes their own, and I could be wrong, but IIRC they are in Ohio
