Engine Decisions

I have 1 73 MG Midget in good original condition. 3rd Gear Synchro is makes noise on up shift and downshift. I have a 210 gearbox and a 1275 block and parts. I was thinking of changing out the old engine and gearbox and rebuilding the spare with some performance parts and connect to the 210. Am I better off starting with a complete engine or send the parts I have to a machine shop to see what can be used. I am looking for a daily highway driver with better performance without being to rough for driving through town. I was then going to keep the original engine and gearbox so I can swap out if I ever sell.
Thanks for any guidance.

Not a bad idea to build up the spare -- that very plan is what I'm in the process of finishing up for my Bugeye. I had a 1275 built up and it and a rib case 4-speed go in place of the original 948/smooth case, which get put aside just in case. Not a bad thing to have the original parts on hand.

I've done the same, but really don't know why. The smooth case tranny I have was quiet, and the 948 ran well, but I'm sure to never use it again, there is no need for it, other as an anchor.
