TR6 Engine Cutout, Black Smoke, Large Backfire

Evening All,
On Saturday just crusin‘ around, my ‘74 TR6 was running fantastic as it has all season
and all of a sudden, no power, then a big bellow of black smoke out the tailpipes and a large backfire! Started backup after jumping with clutch, ran great till almost home then did it again, but got her home!

Checked plugs and are OK, changed fuel filter and getting fuel to carbs, car turns over strong, but no start! Checked for spark with plug against block and nothing. Not sure where to go from here, suggestions would be appreciate, Thanks

Have a look at the rotor inside the distributor

Have a look at the rotor inside the distributor

Replace the condenser, assuming you have one. If that does not help look at the coil next.
Your problem sounds electrical to me. Rotor, points, condensor and /or coil.

I think it's likely that the ignition is cutting out momentarily because there is an intermittent connection somewhere. This can be located through the time-honored tradition of jiggling the wiring.

Another possibility is a sticking float in a carburetor, which is letting a bowl get too full. I kinda doubt that one, as I'd expect the problem to last longer after beginning, but it's still a possibility.

Blue smoke oil black smoke fuel. If plugs are no wet then Dist. and or coil lead to Dist. This short lead works at every cyl firing as spark plug wires only in turn I carry one just for that reason .
