Engine Color

I just sent my engine off to the shop for a rebuild. Somebody told me it would be a good idea to paint the engine when I get it back - for protection I guess. I know that GM engines were orange and Fords were blue, but what color were the original Triumph engines?

Has anyone painted their engine? If so, any tips would be appreciated.

Ferguson tractors (which shared the Standard Vanguard engine with TR3's) were boring gray. My GT6 engine is black, which hides the oil leaks.

The Brits wore red coats to hide the blood. They painted their engines black to hide the oil!

I know MG had a unique maroon color for their engines, but all I know of Triumphs is the engines were a boring black. That's what I had my TR7 mill painted when rebuilt as per the resto guide by Bill Piggot. Unless your concerned about originality I would paint it whatever looks good to you. I wish now I'd have done mine in something more interesting. John Deere green maybe.

Non-gloss black is the color, the black is supposed to transfer heat from the block and give a slight degree of cooling. Most Jags etc are black.
