Engine backfireing on start-up

You might want to do a compression test. A burned intake valve will cause a backfire into the carbs. Also, check the dist. cap for cracks, or, tracking.

Aloha All,

The Red Flash, my TF let me know a few weeks ago that I had been ignoring her in favor of my TR3, the Red Shark. I noticed a decrease in gas mileage, a decrease in power under load (hill climbing), a change in the exhaust note and backfiring through the carbs on acceleration and deceleration. I have changed plugs, points, spark plug wires, adjusted valve clearances, cleaned the carbs, topped up dashpot oil, new air cleaners and adjust timing statically to TDC. The backfiring persisted and then I noticed the exhaust/intake manifold gasket was bad (burned in places), so that and the manifold to pipe gasket were replaced. For good measure I also changed the oil and filter.

On cold start up, the engine still will occasionaly backfire on acceleration, apparently through the carbs. I hear the noise from the front of the car. I am looking for other things to check. Does the timing need to be adjusted or is fuel mixture a possible problem? Any help will be appreciated.

Safety Fast,
Dave

Aloha Ed,

I think subconsciously I needed to check compression, but dreaded the outcome and was hoping for an easy fix. Well this weekend I check compression and have 0 psi on number 4. That explains the change in exhaust note and decrease in power. No other choice than pull the head and fix it.

Safety Fast,
Dave
