engine and trans removal

Anyone have a tech tip or archive link on engine removal? Seems like I remember someone suggesting raising the rearend. Thanks all. BR

Hi Bryan
I just removed the engine out of my 67 B-GT last night. It actually went very smooth. I am sure that there are a few ways to do it but my method was to lift the car up on jack stands ~1 foot giving me axcess to all the bolts under the car. I then disconnected the transmission because I did not have a large enough garage to pull the entire works out of the engine bay. I used a proper engine hoist (one on wheels) to walk the motor out. You need to support the front end of the transmission so it will not fall when disconnected from the motor. The engine came out cleanly without damaging anything. I did remove the oil filter mount first. (gave me more room). the next step (in a day or so) will be dropping the transmission and removing it. ( the car should be high enough to slide it out). Putting it back in may be a diffrent story. I would like to put the engine and transmission in as a single unit. (Easier to line up the spline and clutch) but that will not happen for a while. I have lots of body work to do first.

Hi, Yes, When I pulled my B engine and tranny, as one unit, I chocked front wheels and raised rear, on jack stands. The angle eases the removal of eng and trans, same for installation. Found this info by posting same question.. Remember to remove shift lever and wires from reverse switch on trans. Trans must be supported by jack, while removing engine mounts.

The transmission and engine can easily be removed as a unit with an engine hoist (cherry picker) and the worm drive accessory that allows you to adjust the angle of hang of the unit. The unit must be tilted at a steep angle to allow final extraction or insertion. If you choose, the rear end could be jacked up to help the angle. This is the recommended procedure in the shop manual.
