How do I remove the black handle from the chrome emergency brake lever? I need to rebuild the internals.

Thanks!

Tom

If you're talkin about the handgrip it doesn't need to come off to attack the "internals" but that being said the grip is a slip on and a super tight fit so clamp the handle and pull while twisting counter clockwise..It's a super tight fit so it's gonna take some effort.

Tom,
The black handle is an external slip on piece. The E. Brake handle is a tube that internals are accessed from the bottom.
The upper internals are the button and a long spring that extend the full length of the tube.
Charley
P.S. I will correct myself it is not a long spring but rather a rod that attaches the top button with the lower ratchet mechanism.

Thanks for the replies. I'll take another look because I thought that button, spring and rod came out the top.

There were two types of grips used on TR2 TR3 cars as mentioned. If it feels like hard plastic it is the screw on type, if it feels more like rubber it is the friction fit type.

My 1958 TR3A came brand new with the hard black bakelite hand grip which is screwed on. Since you have a TR3 smallmouth it should be like this. On later TR3A's and TR3Bs, the grip was changed to the rubbery slip-on type.

PS to Randall - You can see the top of the gearbox oil filler level in the background behind the right bakelite hand grip. The base of the filler device is flush "metal on metal".

I've been having a time with the repro bakelite handles. The current repros crack at the top if you even grab them too hard.
