Hi All. Looking for advice on electronic ignition. I have come across one Pertronix Ignitor. Has any one got one of these in their car or know of it. Is it worth fitting or better of with standard disy. Its for my 72 B. Regards John

Me too...one of the projects for this winter is to covnert to electronic ignition. From what I have read here, The Pertronix is the best way to go. I had a link to a good source at a good price that I will email to you, if I can find it. Good Luck!

Opps...no email on your profile, so here is the address for the best price I have found...

Though I have read that some have had problems, I have Pertronix ignitions in all of my classic cars. They have performed flawlessly. I did have to make a simple modification to the tach. pickup as you may find the tach to read too high. The following link (Written for Crane's electronic ignition) will show you how to correct the high reading. Page 16 addresses the Smith tach correction. Good luck, Rickweb page

I just installed my second pertronix in a 69 Gt yesterday and it took all of 15 minutes to do. My advise to you is to use a magnetic tipped screwdriver because the mounting screws are very small. Installation is simple, first disconnect wire at negative side of coil, remove distributor cap from distributor body, remove rotor button, remove condenser and points (3 screws all together), remove the wire terminal(the piece where the wires exit the distributor), install the pertronix mounting plate(looks like the point set base)with the 2 screws included, then the electronic module mounts on that with 2 nuts provided(i used a 5/16th nut driver), next a black plastic piece fits on the distributor shaft just beneath the rotor button, install the rotor button, route the 2 wires out the distributor cap (it comes with a form fitted rubber plug to replace the old points terminal), install the distributor cap, then it's a matter of running the red wire to the (+) side of the coil and the black wire to the (-) side. If i can do it, you can do it...and were always here on the forum to help

I installed a euro-spec dist. with Petronics and couldn't be happier. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

5 years & 30,000 miles on the B's Pertronixs w/no trouble. 3 years & 10,000 miles on the Pertronixs on the TD w/no trouble.
Try that with points!!

I've had the pertronix on my '74 TR6. I replaced it with a Crane XR700 because I thought thte pickup was going bad. As it turns out, it was a faulty fuse box. The pertronix looks more original. The Crane requires a black box to be mounted. The upside of the Crane is that it has a little light that blinks every time the ignition fires. It could help you trouble shoot an ignition problem better than the Pertronix. I'm about to do one or the other to my '69 B. I haven't decided which one to go with yet.

I have used Pertronix, Crane/Allison, and the Hitachi conversion.

The price given on the web link above is excellent. I like Pertronix. I replaced the Crane/Alison unit in the GT6 after I did a dumb a$$ thing and got its external module wet while washing the engine bay. With Pertronix that's not going to happen. You'll find the Pertronix is a very good investment.

On the other hand, if you want to be different, do a Google search for the Hitachi distributor conversion. It's fairly easy to do. You will have to recondition any donor dizzy you decide to install but it's as much about fun as having a better ignition system.

Thank you all for your replys. I will get the system and let you know how it goes. Regards John. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif
