Electronic ignition woes

Been having nothing but trouble. Maybe I can explain.
Replaced ignition (45DE4) with Crane Electronic and PS 40 coil. Could only get it to run erratically. Very warm box with use of resistor. Took resistor off and ran cooler, but not any better (erratic). Have rebuilt carburetors (with Gross jets) and am getting plenty of gas to cylinders (ie, wet plugs).
Thoght maybe it might be the distributor so I had a 45DM4 sitting around. I changed the breaker plates to accept the Crane ignition and set static timing, but now I can't get it to start at all, as if I'm getting no spark. Is it possible my modifying the 45DM4 could be the problem and should go back to my 45DE4 setup? It's getting very frustrating. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
Since you have apparently worked on the fuel system as well as the ignition, start by going back to your stock dizzy with accurately set points and timing to determine if it's a fuel or ignition problem.
 
Did you use the same cap and rotor when you replaced the distributor? A bad cap and/or rotor can give the symptons you describe.
