Giday guys.

Im pretty set on changing the dizzy in my car to an electric system. After 2 rebuilds, it still plays up. Doesn’t leave me with much confidence.
-I recon most British parts in my car are gone /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

My old man has rang around for some elec systems, anywhere from $500-$800 au from mechanics. Personally I think that’s a little bit steep considering the ones I’ve seen on Mossmotors, etc, in us dollars.

What good elec systems are out and what do people recommend for a good race setup?
I’m after a complete system, not the add-on type that replace the points.

-I remember a while back, i was searching through the net (as u do) and i found a guy with a BRG mgb roadster with an electric ignition system that he could advance and retard by means of a switch on his dash. I cant remember the name of it....

Anyone had experience with this?

Any advice, recommendations etc... PLEASE!

I installed a Crane 700 electronic system, (about $170 Canadian w/tax) 2 years ago, easy to install and have not had an ounce of problem with it. My diistributor was worn and the idle was never static. The Crane eliminated that and now my idle is steady at 850rpm.

Jarrod,

The ignition system the guy was referring to was probably an MSD system. They are super nice setups. The timing advance/retard feature is often used in conjunction with nitrous oxide. When you hit the nitrous button, you need to retard your timing or "BOOM". The MSD box gives you the option of being able to run your timing advanced most of the time and then retard it only when needed. Another feature of the MSD box is the programmable rev limiter. I run an MSD ignition in my 5.0 mustang and I love it. Get out your wallet, though!

Hello Jarrod,
two rebuilds?, there is so little to go wrong in those distributors. As long as the spindle bushes are good and the mechanical advance is free then why waste your money on an electronic system?
Who or where were the distributors rebuilt?

Alec

I have had my Crane in now for over a year and I would never go back to points again. I feel I have a smoother running car that is easier to start. And more reliable.

i bought and installed the pertronix on my 76 MGB. The 76 B's Omni distributor was notorious for overheating at the most inopportune time and leave you stranded on the side of the road. Since the pertronix, i;ve had flawless performance, and, it costs around a $100.00

I will echo mgbmedic's comments, the Pertronix works nicely. I put it in my Midget and I've never had a bit of trouble with it.

HI EMGB, Non of the Electronic systems mentioned, while excellent for the road, are up to Race performance except the "MSD". However, as it was indicated get your wallet out. I think you can get their bottom of the line unit which is totally adequate for your application for about $400.00 US---FWIW---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/patriot.gif
