Electrical problem with flasher relay?

In checking out the electronics on the restoration my left front indicator light does not flash. The bulb is ok as I have put 12 volts to the wire and the filament works. Also the lights all work using the light switch. The right side flashes ok as does the left side rear. Does this mean that the flasher relay contact number 2 that goes to the left front light is not making contact? The relay is working as I can see it move. Thanks and have a good day!
 
Given your facts, I'd agree with your conclusion. Have you tried bridging the contacts with a screwdriver?
 
Hi John,
Page N15 of the shop manual has a guide to set the airgaps of the relay. You might want to give that a try.
 
I did bridge the contacts with a tester and noticed that if I pushed the relay down normally it did not make contact but if I pushed it down hard it would make contact so this told me the gap was too great. I reduced the gap and now it works fine. I was having nightmares thinking about getting the realy out of the car with the air duct in the way. Luckly I won't have to at least for now. I am going to check out the manual for the gap measurements for the future. Thanks for your help and have a good day!

I am having some problems also. 1962 BT7. Went to get car inspected today had to wait in line with 6 cars ahead of me. Car got a little hotter than normal up to 190-195F. When I got to the inspector the left side worked, right side did not! FAIL!! When I got home I checked the bulb, it was OK. Turned the key on, left side worked, right worked, but right side flashed dim and faster until it would not flash at all.Is my problem a hot flasher unit, bad wiring, or failing flasher unit??

Hi Tod,
One thing you could try is switching the turn signal wires at the flasher relay. It looks like it's 2 to 6 and 3 to 7. If the problem goes to the other side, I'd think it was a problem with the relay. If the blinking problem stays on the same side, look for some bad connections in the right side wiring.
 
Yes I think perhaps a bad ground at the lamp assy may be your. problem
 
I had a similar problem - intermittent operation. My solution was to remove all terminals from the relay unit and clean up the unit, clean up the terminals and replace all with a little coating of vaseline jelly - no problems since

My problem was the expensive flasher unit. I swapped out one from my 100-4 and it worked fine! Now I am short one! Does anybody rebuild these, or is it cheaper (How can that be!) to buy a new one?

For all with relay problems you should be able to find the article in the WIKI. I wrote that article several years ago and I hope it got transferred to the current version. I explained how with photos and proper gaps shown. It really isn't as difficult as it may look. I used a spark plug gapping tool and a set of feeler gauges. It is important to follow the sequence shown. I'll send the article to you personally if you'll give me your email address.
