Electric Oil Pressure Sending Unit

Talked to a mechanic the other day and told him about the cost of a Oil Pressure sending unit for MGBs. He told me to take the highest reading on the gauge and buy a GM unit for that pressure. A GM unit has a 1/8th pipe connection and can be had with a spade lug wire connection as the original. The price here is about $40 to $50. Verses $140. Has anyone tried this? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif PJ
 
Haven't tried that, but here's a similar situation: A couple of us were on the way to Townsend for the show earlier in the year. His BGT brake lights weren't working, and we suspected the stoplight switch. We stopped at a small town auto parts store, and the guy at the counter took a look at the old one, and gave him a "generic" switch. Worked great (and I assume it still is).

Unless you can find a NOS Smiths sender or a good used one then I would try the GM unit though I cannot imagine the calibration being the same. The repro senders are usually bad out of the box. (See Plain White Box Rant)

I probably have a good, used one if that doesn't work out.
 
I swapped my '69 over to a direct mechanical unit...had 2 electric units go bad and the 3rd was bad out of the box...at $135 I figgured "originality be damned!"
