Electric Fan Size

I'm am thinking about putting a electric fan cooling system in. What are the pros and cons of this? If I choose to do this what size fan will I need?

My bugeye has an electric fan. It was installed by the PO who lived in the desert near Sacramento. He had it wired so it was always on, and living there, I don't doubt that he needed it on continuously.

I now have it on a thermostat, so it only comes on around 190F. With the fan running continuously, the car was slow to warm up on cool days. The cooling system is in good shape and really doesn't need the fan, except when I'm stuck in traffic on hot days. It almost never comes on.

I wouldn't bother unless you're convinced you need it. Are you having trouble with overheating? In Fresno, in summer, I can imagine that it could be a help. If you get one, be sure it is as large as possible, covering the full width of the radiator (or full height if that dimension is smaller). Simplest thing is to mount it on the front of the engine and wire it through a switch. Then, you can just flick it on when needed.

Of course, don't expect a fan to compensate for a cooling system in poor shape. Be sure that it is clean, radiator is good, and so on.

I don't know much about Sprites, but as I have a Ford V8 big Healey, in Texas, I've found out a few things about cooling.

Are you talking about ADDING an electric fan as a pusher, or replacing your engine driven fan with an electric?

I don't know what the rest of the gang thinks, I think that the best bang for your buck would be to start off with a Texas Kooler, now from Moss..

I switched to one and added a shroud. That made a significant improvement.

I think that others will agree.

In the interest of transparency, the NTAHC does make a few dollars from each sale. That aside, it's still a great fan.

Thanks Tim for your reply,
Replacing my engine fan, installing this one as a puller fan. Would you know if that fan you gave me a link to would fit my car? In their ad it does not say that it will or won't. It just says it goes to another car.

What size fan do you have installed? That is what very interested in? I want to get the biggest that I can, but looking at it I'm not sure if I can fit the 14" one in or just stick with the 12" one.
