Here she is again, the TR-5 with OD is relisted:

This guy really wants to sell it, apparently. IF (and only if) the car is in the indicated condition, I'd say any price below about $30,000 would be a decent deal.

Come on youse guys with th' deep pockets: BID!!

{and then please, pretty please gimme a ride in it!! :yesnod:}

Ended "reserve not met". I think the highest bid was $24,500?? Can't remember exactly.

Reload and shoot again.

I did in fact bid, though not as high as $30k! My big fear is the PI system. Don't know the first thing about it, and I'm not sure that I'm inclined to do so, or that I could even understand it!

Looks like the PI system is controlled with vacuum lines, probably to open and close the injector valves. From wikipedia, vintage fuel injection systems were achieved with mechanical systems (as opposed to todays electronic systems).

Anyone have a TR5 that can confirm that?

Hi Folks, :savewave:

I was just driving thru and saw what I thought was "Another" TR5 up for grabs! :driving:

I believe I said it would probably get $26,900 or something like that? I did`nt realize it was over already!

Well; I still say $26,900. The seller should`nt be that greedy!!

Just a Passing thought,

Russ

That car has the wrong grille installed, right? It should not have the divot for the crank handle and have the polished aluminum/black finish.

Oh well, I am just being nitpicky...

The TR5 and the TR250 should both have the grille you describe. Problem is, no body makes a replacement grill for them so often TR4A grills get used instead.

Those are not vacuum lines. Those are actually the fuel lines. The valves open under the appropriate pressure. There is a fuel metering unit that couples with the distributor to send high pressure fuel to the correct cylinder at the correct time. Yes, its totally mechanical.

I've read that the Lucas mechanical fuel injection system on these cars, once you put the Bosch fuel pump in and get the system sorted, it's pretty reliable. The Lucas fuel pump was a key weak point.

This car also has the Revington setup on it, also.

I wonder if there's a shop manual around for the Lucas mechanical fuel system???

Wow, you guys are brave! I certainly recall from my class in automotive basics how mechanical PI systems work in theory, but I just don't have faith in my ability to keep it working!

But man am I jonsing after that TR5.

Interesting... I assume then that the injectors contain some sort of ball valve. I imagine that that might make it difficult to tune, since over time the ball valve springs which give way under pressure would wear out, making it run rich. Even temperature changes would effect the spring rate.

Is that in fact how it works? Or am I off base here? Are there any good references on how mechanical fuel injection systems work?

You can jones up the 26 to 30 K you can "ford" the mechanic to keep the PI workin!

Excellent stuff, Alana, thanks for posting.

Convert to Lucas mechanical PI??? No problemo!! PI represents mere, sundry details to the true Triumph enthusiast (who has repeatedly overcome piddly breakdowns/repairs and has more patience than old Job himself!)! :yesnod:

I thought about it for a while. Even bought the complete setup, but then realized that I wanted electronic (with a sane fuel pressure).

Only a few hours to go. This is his second listing, I'm thinkin' that nobody's gonna cough up the $35,000 this time, either.

It's not advertised on Hemmings, Colector Car Trader right now. If it doesn't go this time on eBay, we'll see it again soon somewhere else for sale.

I don't think this guy would have listed it twice without a pause if he didn't really want to sell.

C'mon, you'se deep pocket guys! ONLY $35,000, mebbe a little less! Heck, the Healey guys pay that much for a paint job!!!

The books say a nice TR-5 is "worth" $30,000+.

maybe not . . . :square:

Sure is purty, tho'. You'd be the main attraction at all the Triumph shows, that's for sure.

I guess the "major interest from European collectors" isn't that major. Shame - looks like a nice car, but clearly he thinks it is worth more than the market does. Perhaps he should put it up for auction with Barrat-Jackson..
