TR2/3/3A Ebay Starters for TR3

I repurchased a TR3 that I originally bought in 1984 and sold in 1987. Of course the the person I sold it to screwed it up, but I did get a great deal. I am starting to work on it and the starter is bad, it has a dome starter. Has anyone purchased one of the starters on ebay and if so how was the quality. I have made an offer on one but the offer is so low I doubt that it will be accepted.

I personally would go for a high torque starter. Unless you want orginal equipment.

I think my research found that TSI had the best prices on the gear reduction starters. I don't know if that's still true. That's where I got mine, and it works swell.

I have nothing against Ted, but I bought my starter for my TR6 from here

Looks like 189 and that includes free shipping if you decide to go that way. Just wanted to present another option.

Safari, I have a couple of stock starters as well that may work for you depending on what type you need. Message me if interested.

Cheers,

My "high torque" starter came from TRF, which was cheapest for me (check out their "Customer Investment Program).

I have heard that some of them suffer premature failure, because the wires inside the solenoid are not properly secured and vibrate under racing conditions. But mine has done the equivalent of about 5 years of daily street driving, with no problems at all.

But be sure you get the starter that matches your flywheel. It's not uncommon at all to find the wrong flywheel installed (for example, TS13571L should have the early version, but has an alloy TR4A flywheel installed by the DCO), so it's best to actually look at the flywheel. With the starter out, look through the hole for the bolts that hold the ring gear on. Bolt-on ring gear means you need the later type starter (10 tooth pinion, instead of the earlier 9 tooth).

As far as "rebuilt" Lucas starters on eBay, I would consider them at best a core to be rebuilt. The last one I bought literally had blasting media inside the rear bearing cover!

Thanks everyone, all the information has help. I will go with a high torque starter.
