eBay Bugeye fuel tanks, recent experience?

I got one of those and love the tank! I can't remember, but I seem to think that VB's tank was a better price deal??????? Maybe sender, shipping, etc... Dunno?? I do like the tank though. The fuel fitting is threaded and I have a hose clamped to a male end. Wasn't a big deal for me.

I actually bought ones of these from this very guy and in the end, everything worked out. But 2 warnings to share:

It came to me very slightly dented. I didn't notice it when it got here...noticed it later, and notified the seller. He sent me another one...but again, the replacement came to me very slight dented. I gave up. I guess it just happens in transport. You really can't notice it, and I figured it would just have to do as is.

Second, when I installed/put the tank up and filled with gas (unfortunately to the brim), gas freely started leaking out from where the sender unit goes in. I dropped the tank, changed the o-ring from cork to rubber (or the other way around--can't remember), used better quality screws (stainless) and teflon tape. Put it back up again and it was ok.

As for price, I'm pretty sure this is cheaper (I think that's why I bought it...)

As I recall, these don't have a drain plug. Has that been an issue with anyone?

The last new tank I bought didn't have a drain it it, so I silver soldered one in place. It's a convenient feature, and easily installed.

I bought one of the ebay tanks as well. Nice tank. It did have a small dent in it but looked much better than the old one. The only complaint I had was the filler neck is slightly shorter than the original so my gas cap sits really low but still goes on easily. The missing drain plug was a concern but I have one of those vaccum pumps and figured I could just use that.

Drew,

I had to change the fitting on my fuel line to work with the tank. I was told that the manufacturer was notified and the proper british thread was to be used in later runs. I bought my tank less than a year ago so it may have been resolved by now.

The only other issue that I saw was the shorter filler neck. As was mentioned it works and actually looks pretty nice as it pulls the cap closer to the body.

HTH

Thanks for the thoughts. I thought I had remembered something about the fitting being wrong, nice to know I wasn't just making that up. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Still not sure what I'll do, but a new tank seems to make sense to me. I'll have a new/rebuilt engine, carbs, and fuel pump, so I'd hate to start the fuel chain with a suspect tank.
