TR6 Easy TR6 turnnion ???

I'm freshening up the front suspension on my TR6, and I see from the manual the vertical pivot of the trunnion uses 90 weight, and not grease, but it doesn't say anything about the horizontal shaft/bolt, sleeves, and nylon bushings. I'm all apart and cleaned up, but I don't know if or what to use to lube the horizontal axis /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Shurely it doesn't run dry......... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

Hi,

No, it doesn't run dry. Use 90w on all of it during assembly , i.e. both the vertical acme thread and the horizontal pivot. That should make it easier to grease properly once it's back toegether. The 90w helps the grease get in there initially.

You *could* slather it everything with grease before assembly, but will probably find some trouble coaxing grease in during normal chassis lube intervals until there is some wear in the parts. Even with this trick of 90w during assembly, it can be tough to get grease into the trunnion with a grease gun. A lot of people continue to use 90w on that particular zerk, but you need a special gun for the purpose. I've had pretty good luck getting heavier grease in if an assistant turns the steering slowly back and forth while I'm putting pressure on the grease gun with one hand and holding the end on the zerk with the other. It also sometimes helps to use a jack under the tire to lift the suspension a little, while greasing the trunnion.

Thanks Alan. I was wondering what the deal was using 90 weight.I kind of expected to see a hole in the trunnion that allowed lube to come down to the horizontal shaft from the vertical thread but there was none. How do you lube the horizontal shaft during normal maint? Just squirt 90 weight on assembly?

Hi again,

I stand corrected. Earlier cars had greasable joints on the outer/lower horizontal fulcrum (at the trunnion). TR4A and later do not.

You are using white nylon bushings and steel sleeves in there, just like the ones used at the inboard fulcrum/frame mounting bracket, right? Those do run dry and normally are not greased.

The only place that gets 90w oil is the vertical acme thread of the trunnion itself. Prefill partially, about 25%, with oil. I'm not sure if there is a zerk on the bottom to add grease or oil later. (There is on the earlier cars.)

Sorry for the confusion!
