Bill,
You remind me of an old painter who could put the best looking enamel and lacquer on a car that you could imagine. He would heat the paint on a hot plate before pouring it into a warm cup on his gun. I learned the method when his helper wasn't there one night and he was painting my 442 for me. Here I was 19 and helping an artist. He taped the switch on the hot plate so I couldn't screw it up and had me slowly stir the mix while he painted the car.
He would tap on the glass on the booth door when he wanted a fresh cup of paint, so I had to strain and pour it into a waiting warmed cup and get it over to the little double booth door for transfers, as he would let no one in with him while he worked so dust wouldn't get sucked in.
Insurance and OSHA people would go nuts if they saw that happening today.
