Hi Everyone.

I am looking for an early one piece grille surround moulding in almost any condition, including a damaged item.

I have many early and NLA TR2 parts to offer as a trade, if it would help some one to consider letting one go,

Happy to pay a premium price as I am fully aware that this is an unusual item.

I can arrange and pay for shipping to the UK, or have friend in the USA receive it via internal carrier if that is preferred.

Anything considered.

I do have a pretty good TR3/3A two piece surround to offer in Part Exchange too. [it has no Cover strips but several clips and bolts].
Kind regards,
Trevor

Good luck with finding a part so rare. I have only ever seen the 2 piece mlds and they are hens teeth.
I would suggest that it will have to be fabricated and chromed(at horrid expense).
The last tr2 I restored ,wound up with self adhesive chrome/plastic moulding Carefully done it is
much better than nothing ,and not prone to stone damage. Available OTC at a trim shop.

Yes there were only around 2-300 as far as I can tell so I'm not too hopeful.
If I don't find one I will make one ... looking at the TR3 two part one I have it's quite a simple fabrication job, flat brass with a double rolled edge, then get it chromed or chrome powder coated.

You have only to get the 2 piece and add in the gap on each side.Hand fit the beast, and chrome away.
Brass can be silver soldered easily ,so fabing the gap bit should may get you to the goal.

Thank you MD.
I was reluctant to use the 2 piece one I have as it too is quite rare.
However I could use the top section of the top half , which is not required to fill the gaps at the sides.
Might be my best option..

I've always preferred the early cars without the added trim, but then my early long door car never came with it so....

I agree however mine came with trim as the lower and middle holes were in the panel already and contemporary photos show it with the trim in place.
I've now made and fitted the trim.

I had to look at mine to remember if it was one piece. It is, but it is the only one I have, of course.

Looking at it, I do think there are many skilled metal workers...most in the UK...who could easily copy the trim. It is simply a "C" shaped channel, formed to the shape of the mouth.

I agree but the demand is so tiny I guess it's not worth reproducing in any quantity, as with many nla parts for older cars that were made in such small numbers..

I'm quite pleased with my effort though.

I'm saying you can find someone to hand make it, if you really want it. It would be a one-off, not even a low production item. With the Stearman I am rebuilding, I have had to make many one-off hand made parts.

The one you made looks fine to me. It would take someone who really knows TR2's to say it's not original.

I wonder if 3D printing could make a suitable replica? Even if it needed to be smoothed and polished before plating it would be far easier then making one from scratch. It would have to be a printer with a large bed.

The small production cars or short series with different parts can be a real pain. I seem to be attracted to them - owned a Swallow Doretti (276 made) a Lamborghini Islero S (100 made) and a TVR Grantura Mk 3 (c. 70). You have to hope that you can see an original part to replicate or get drawings. My long door TR-2 was one of the more common oddballs I had - and it was a pain as it was a RHD car which meat that parking here in Canada meant not being able to open the long door against the curb! It is great when a privateer undertakes to reproduce rare parts and share them, but a lot of those guys are dying off and no one is stepping up to take their places - we just lost Todd Clarke who sold many such MG parts.

I knew a guy some time ago(God rest him) I believe he sometimes used silver to recreate odd shinny bits.
He did some work for Leno and was a master craftsman. Silver is not cheap but it aint 24K either.
Just a WFI....
