My daughter who is at university in Ayr Scotland just got me an early christmas present. Jackie Stewarts new book and also got it signed by him and her photo taken with him. she says he is a true gentleman. He told her he is coming to Toronto in the new year. February I think she said so will have to check out where he will be.

Jackie Stewart is another of the "Greats" of motor racing. Look at what they drove, no wings, no downforce, no protection.....

I am happy to hear that he was so pleasant, it reinforces my impression of the man. The "old school" racing drivers generally seem to be similarly decent guys. Stirling Moss is a gem.

long story...

Stewart was invited to a meeting of the State Police prior to the Indy 500 back in the late 60's.

He was riding with a Indiana trooper and, somewhere south of Indy on US 31, they heard a radio call about a bank robbery in the next town. Sure enough the cop who was driving spotted the thieves and gave chase with Stewart hanging on for dear life.

After a brief car chase the thieves stopped the car and made a run for it. The trooper instructed Stewart to chase one of the crooks...and he caught 'em! Stewart put his hand in his jacket and convinced the guy he had a gun and held him at bay for a few minutes until the cop got back with the other robber...I heard this story a few years ago on WIBC radio in Indy on the pre-race Donald Davidson show...

I just can't imagine that little Scot holding a guy at bay with his finger stuffed in his jacket...

You mean the thieves could understand him?
Maybe that's what scared him!.
While at Ford's 100th celebration in 2003,
I walked by the table where their had been NASCAR
drivers every other time.I looked over,& it was Jackie!
It's the only autograph I've ever gotten.
