EARLY BN4(andBN2 stering BOX)

That not appear on BMC Manual and not appear on AH Spare or AHhead listing
It appear same at the shims parts 263-145/155/165 of the front suspesion
Can anyone explain why it is not on BN4 BMC MANUAL illustration
the function of the pieces and if must be 6 pieces or can be interchanged with the front shims whit same thickness
that I have measured inside the steering box --mm 4,3 ??
I have not controlled if pieces compare on the SERVICE PART LIST

Hello Andrea,
for my understanding the shims are to eleminate axial part tolerances of the worm gear. You don`t need more than one piece of the shims ,or no shims, if you are able to realise the axial clearance acc. the manual.
The shims are not washer springs (belleville)!
I think the shims to compensate the axial clearance are not in the manual because in new condition of manufacturing the BMC combinate parts. Maybe you find informations to the axial play in an aftermarket manual.

Hi Andrea,
Those are belleville washers, not shims. You are right, they are not shown in the manual, or talked about in the text for the steering box.

They go on the shaft (#10 in Moss diagram) as shown in the Moss catalog and act as springs pushing the shaft upwards against the ajusting screw (#15 in Moss diagram).

You need these Belleville washers NOT shims. They are slightly dished washers of spring steel and you place them face to face - ie first washer curve up, 2nd washer curve down, 3rd washer curve up, 4th curve down, etc. So when you have a stack of them together you will have a spring. I don't remember exactly but the stack of washers is probably an 1/8"-3/16" or more and can compress. This system allows constant upwards pressure against the adjusting screw so things are always snug (my guess is this was designed in because of the slight taper of the steering worm, which allows it to be slightly tighter when going straight, and compensates when you turn so it doesn't become loose/sloppy).

Anyway, don't use shims. Use the correct Belleville washers.

Tanks Dave for your exhaustive reply. on your description I have find my oldest six in one of my card box-tomorrow I put them inside my steering box following your instruction -as a spring

Because all part catalogues shown the shims and call it shims,it will be a special design of the early BN4 steering ?

About your question. Yes it is nearly 0°C but the sun is shining. Only for the hard guys... :wink: I have to prepare a garden path with natural stones.
