Dumb Question?

I was driving my 96 XJS today when all of a sudden the needle on the oil pressure gauge just 'popped'. It registered 2 then it jumped to 6, it was like the needle was confused. It did this several times and if I had to describe what it was doing, I would say it was bouncing. The car didn't change in any way, that is the engine purred, the temperature gauge was on the nose, etc. I checked the oil later on and it was right on the button. I know I'll have to take Onslow to the garage but... Do you think I might get lucky and find it is only a malfunctioning sensor to the gauge or should I be planning on a oil pump???

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Could be an oil filter by-pass or pump by-pass valve or sensor. I presume you change oil pretty regular?

I think it's been about 4-5 months as I don't use Onslow as a daily driver. Indeed I probably only drive him about 3 or 4 times a month. Something tells me rather than go by mileage for an oil change, I should be going by calendar months?

Well, well. It was the sending unit. $252.81 later and Onslow is well again. Then onto the petrol station and he lunched for a total of $45.34 and his tummy is now full. For future, I think I'll just take hubby to lunch - he's cheaper.

Glad you got it done. Yes, you should do the oil by months now since it sits longer than most. Remember to do the trans by mileage. Also, since it sits for long periods make sure you have the brake fluid renewed every 2 years to keep system in shape.( Gets the moisture and contaminants out.)

Thanks for the good information. I will be more attentive in the future. While I do monitor Agatha (Healey 100-M)as she is a much older vehicle, I think I've been remiss with Onslow because I still consider him 'new.'
