Drove a Midget for the first time

They're a hoot, to be sure. Lots out there, so keep your eyes open and your car will come your way.

David - they're a blast is correct! Now, go try an MGB - early on (pre all the smog stuff)

Beep, beep, Bugeye comming through.

Tony - why?

Because!

Seriously, I like my Midgets for one reason, my MGB's for another, and my MGB GT's for even another....& it all depends on what I'm looking for when I choose which one to drive.....heck, the same is true for my MkI Midget, my MkIII Midget & my 1500 Midget (which, by the way, I hate with a passion!)

I don't think anyone in my family has ever paid more than about $750 for a Midget.

Generally you can find extremely cheap Midgets with an electrical problem that the owner can't figure out (or is too intimidated by the Prince of Darkness' hex to even try) and, with a little time, have yourself a great running car. The Midget I drive today was purchased for $450 with an electrical problem... one brake light switch later it ran like a top (mostly, but for the rest of that discussion see one of my posts on ballast resistors!)

The Midget that my Mom currently drives was also in the neighborhood of a few hundred dollars and all it needed was a new grounding strap from the engine to the chassis.

Good finds are out there but the tipping point is how much dough vs how much elbow grease do you want to invest. They are inversely proportional!

Cheers and Good Luck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Stop picking on the 1500's Tony. They have their charms also. Like if I have a little bump, I dont have to worry about damage. Not to mention Spitfire parts work on my engine as well. They're cheap, plentiful, and not to hard to modify.

Thanks for the replys. I do want to try a B on for size too. I can't see myself driving a Midget on a major highway (I know many people do). So for driving out of town, a B would be nice to have. Also having a backseat (tiny as it may be) can really come in handy.

Will do, Brian! I own it because I need it to complete the set (though I'm still looking for a MkII)....someday, I may just take it on a road trip to see if it can change my mind!

ditch the ZS, the emissions gear and the RBs and you may change your mind about it!

I'm not very fond of my 1500 Midget either. I had a '71 back in the day and I remember it being much more of a pleasure to motor in. My 1500 is my first foray back into the hobby and it really is in excellent condition. It's just doggy. Perhaps I'll sell it next spring and look for an older one...

Nah, its in the collection as an example of the last Midget.

In the early 70's.. I owned a 1962 MGB.. original leather interior and pull handle car. Absolutely original. I drove that thing to work and college for years and years. I just couldn't break her. (then I sold her to a hippy for $750)Although my 67 Midget has been overly mechanically restored... when it was new.. I wouldn't drive it from town to town without major mechanical malfunction. I enjoy driving my Midget.

I am working on a MPI plenum style EFI system that should really wake the 1500 up, but in the meantime, all you rubber bumper detracters, take a look at the dual SU set up available from quantumechanics.com. I have never personally driven a "euro spec" Midget 1500, but all the "numbers" show it out performing every Spridget that came before it. And that is WITH the heavy rubber bumpers. Imagine what it could do without!

Just my $.02.

Ps. If you can't be with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with.
