Driveshaft length

Does anybody know, are all the drive shafts on our sprites the same length? I keep looking at my 1275 / datsun 5 speed setup, it looks like the driveshaft should be a inch longer.
I here a knocking noise when I let off the gas and I think it is the drive shaft that is moving on the input spline shaft. The drive shaft is a little loose in the trans tail, only because it does not go in far enough. The u-joints /mounts are all new and everything seems tight.

Cheers Phil
PS very big day tomorrow Iam getting the ultimate toy, the garage lift will be here at 8am. I spent three days last week cutting cement and pouring two cement pads to reinforce my floor. My floor was not thick enough, only 2 inches, they say minimum 4 inches, it is now 8 inches thick. Pictures of my new toy coming soon.

Can't help with your driveshaft question, but all your problems will seem easier after you have your lift installed. I've had mine for about five years, and I can't imagine working on cars without it any more. It turns formerly difficult jobs like exhaust, suspension, and brake work into enjoyable tasks. I use it much more often than I expected.

When I was younger I didn't mind crawling around under a car, but not any more.

Drive shafts should all be the same length. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong, PLEASE!)

At least with the MorrisService kit, sometimes the U-joint slaps the side of the tunnel. This could be the noise you're hearing. Put you hand on the tunnel when you lift off, on the passenger side. See if you can feel it hitting the side. If so, the solution may sound odd, but this works......

Get the rear of the car up on blocks so that you can start the car, put it in gear and let the clutch out. Get a broom handle, Not a broom, just the handle. As you let out the clutch, toss it up the tunnel on the passenger side. The U-joint should catch it and spin it around a couple of times smashing it into the side of the tunnel and denting it outward slightly. The clunk should be gone if done correctly.

I have done some tunnel work; yes the u joint was touching the tunnel side.Fixed that in the spring, maybe not enough. Good idea to push the u joint to the side just maybe it is still touching. I will try that after my lift arrives.
It is 810, lift should be here any minute. Christmas in September.
Thanks Phil

Yo, Bill...You've been talking to Paul A! He told me the same thing. Gotta give it a try. I have the exact same problem.

I DO talk to Paul A., but in this case I WATCHED him do it when he (we) put the 5 speed into my car. It works like a champ.
