I'm not sure if it is the same as a '72 but mine has to be all the way as far as it will go to even begin to release. It is also very hard to move. In order to expose the mechanism on mine, you have to remove the upper seat cover and foam. Not your Sunday afternoon job.

I concur. It is a total dismantle. The lever mechanism can only be accessed by total removal of the cover and foam. It is a simplist mechanism but it will take you some work to get at it. As long as you have it apart, assess whether you want to replace the foam.
