Nial - thanks for posting that reminder.

I contacted him several months ago, asking how he would handle mechanical breakdowns during the trip. Unfortunately, my only reply was to ask me if I'd advertise and sponsor his visit if he came to my area. I got the feeling that expense is no object for him.

I swear, with my owner cancer battle going on, I'd like to do something similar myself, in one of my "less than perfect" old cars. Not for money, but for awareness of how "rusted out bodies" still have some life left in them.

But - I fear an expensive breakdown in the middle of Nowhere-ville Nebraska :smile:jester:smile:.

A mechanical disaster, with a $5000 parts and repair bill, really prevents me from attempting my dream - a trip for "Mac and Phyllis".

OT but think about it differently. You are nowhere in the country further than $500 worth of airline tickets home. Either walk away from the car or have it trailered home. 2k total -tops.
 
After reading the report of his trip in "Moss Motoring",
I was considering doing the same thing with my ratty Cortina.
I asked him to call me - never happened.
I came to the conclusion that I was out of my league,& he
was too much of a "corporation" to be bothered with a nobody
like me.
I gave up on the idea after that.

You're wrong about John being a corporation. John funds what he can but depends on the generosity of others. I have had personal dealings with John who is/ was waging his own cancer battle which he seldom speaks of. What I do know about John is that he can promote and what started as one round trip drive from one coast to another has become an ongoing campaign for cancer awareness. He and Grace are to be encouraged and supported.
 
I met John at the Mitty- I think he's a super nice fellow, its just that he is pulled about 50 thousand directions at the same time with a lot of people. Very high energy, but when you get that rare free time with him, he will spend the time talking. I think he started this because he lost a friend to Multiple Myeloma, I lost a friend to the same insidious disease last year as well so we did have something in common to share. My buddy's name is now on the hood of Grace.

Hi Doug - say, earlier in the thread you mentioned you asked John to call you, but he didn't.

Your most recent post says you expect "when someone tells me that they'll call me, they actually call me."

Maybe I'm missing something. Did John actually say he'd call you? Or did he just not respond to your request? I'd imagine he's a *very* busy man.
