drain channel tubes

Happy 4th everyone!
64 BJ8. There are 5 drain channel tubes in the rear of my car. 2 are near the doors and the other 3 are in the rear. The rear ones are: 1 in the center and the other two near the corners. Do the 3 in the rear get covered by the rug? Or just the center drain tube. The rug gets glued I understand. The rug protects the top when it is stored. So glue over all 3 or just the center? Thank you, Roger

Roger,
The rug goes under all of them. Glue it down to the metal but under all of the drain tubes.

Yep that is correct on the drain tubes. However, while you are at it you might want to replace the three in the rear with clear vynil hose instead of the rubber. A bit easier on the hood and they stay clear of debris---Keoke

Hi guys. Thanks a lot. Interesting. The PO glued the rug over the center hose. Wonder why. So, all 3 hoses lay on top of the rug.

Keoke, thanks for the tip. Are you saying the clear is a softer material and less chance to mark the hood/window?

Roger

Yes Roger, the Vinyl hose is smooth snd does not perish like the rubber ones do.---Keoke

What useful information to eavesdrop in on.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

TH,
There are a total of 5 drain hoses that drain the metal channel on a BJ8. Three of them are along the back of where the " hood " is attached. Two of them are near the ends of the drain channel close to where the " hood " frame is attached to the car.

Where are you finding these drains? Are these the ones that lead to the rear wheel wells?

[/ QUOTE ]

NO TH, these are the three along the back edge of the cockpit.---Keoke

TH,
Two of the three rear drain hoses exit " near " to the rear wheel wells on both sides but they actually exit in the cut out area above the rear axle. The center one exits in the middle of this same area.

Roger, I was just reading the Workshop Manual and in Section PPP.5, Removing and Replacing the Cockpit Drain Tube Hoses it says, "To remove the rear drain tube rubber hose ... remove the seat pans ... remove the screws for the seat squab ... The rubber hose may now be pulled off its tube and removed from beneath the cockpit trim carpet

My edition (Issue 3 on that page) only mentions three tubes not 5 but I would guess if they put the center tube under the carpet then the other two back tubes would go under the carpet too unless it is awkward to do so.

Another bit of 'evidence' comes from a photo set of my BJ7 in the 70's with original looking carpet (see below). The center tube is under the carpet (mine has the earlier three tube total drain configuration).

Cheers,
John

Roger:
I suggest that you do not put any of them under the carpet. Use the plastic hose for the back three and preshapped rubber ones for the two that exit in the wheel wells. The voids around the cover hose is nothing but a dirt trap.---Keoke

Roger,

I found some pictures of the way the Nock's install the drain tubes. This is from a later BJ7 that has the 3 back hoses. The middle is under the carpet and the two others are exposed. Choices .. choices /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The center drain tube is under the carpet to protect the rear window from scratching when the hood is in the down position, Lou Salini

Hey John, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there is suppose to be rug material around the two back seat bottoms, as shown in the second photo.

Makes you wonder about what other things are not corect, even from the Knok's.

So it would appear that my PO did install the tubes correct. Center one under the carpet, two corner ones over carpet.

I like Keoke's suggestion though.
Roger

Well that BJ8 as shown by John is a 1966 or earlier car.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif
