The fit into the block should be fairly snug. Spread the splits until it is. But, that's not enough to hold it, so there is also a brace that runs over to a pan bolt (which is extra long). I forget the transition offhand, but some engines had a flat brace and a spacer (to clear the lip of the pan), while others had a twisted brace and no spacer.
I used a little Permatex Aviation on the tube, last time I installed one. That joint does get wet with oil on hard turns.
