DoorRattle

Gents,

My driver's door has quite a loud rattle, which I initially thought due to the horizontal bar that connects the inner door release to the locking mechanism. On closer inspection, the rattle is coming from the rear-most edge of the glass when the window is fully down. The window is rattling against the rear window channel.

Has anyone dealt with this before, or have any ideas on how to resolve?

thanks
Steve

Maybe you need to replace the plastic sliders that fit to the glass and slide inside the runners? They do wear over time?

Yep. When new plastic guides didn't fix the problem I got into the door. The channel that the window guides slide in was too wide--pinched it together just a little and rattle gone.

The plastic sliders are only on the front-facing edge of the edge of the window on my car. The Moss catalogue doesn't show anything on the rear-facing edge either. The front-facing sliders on my car are in good shape and do not allow a lot of lateral movement.

I was considering squeezing the window guides, but wanted to reserve that as a last resort ...

There should be a nylon slider on the rear bottom curve of the channel that actually holds the glass, and you can not change it without taking the glass out of that channel ( from memory). If you do not have one then this should be the main cause.

Photo is a bit blurred but you can just make it out on the left hand side - that yellow looking thing!

I had such a rattle myself but found that the rear guide channel - bolted to the inside rear of the door, had the bottom fixing bracket rusted through so was flapping in the door. Removed it cleaned and welded it up - good as new now.

Another cause could be that the foam rubber sleeve on the connecting bar from the door handle to the lock could have perished allowing the bar to contact other parts of the door - unlikely but possible.

Thanks everyone. The horizontal bar between the inner door handle and the locking mechanism has the fabric sleevs still in place and in good condition. The noise is definitely coming from the rear of the window edge. I think it's time to remove the window and see what the issue really is -will let you know what I find.

I removed the chrome plate that covers the 'hip' on the door, and was able to see down into the track. I noted that the window was almost completely forward of the rear door track, and was therefore doing little to guide or hold the window. I removed the rear window track and inserted a few washers between the track and the rear of the door, thereby pushing the track forward to meet the window. With this, and a couple of strategically-placed sticky pads, the rattle is gone!
