Door Locks

Does anyone know how the lock on a TR6 door is supposed to work? Mine don't currently, so I bought 2 new ones, and want to know how to install them. I have a general idea, because I've disassembled a locking mechanism before, but don't recall specifically how to it fits together. I know coming off of the lock there is piece of metal with a long slot cut in it, like 2 big "prongs," like the picture I drew, with the circle being the lock. Is big wire like thing coming from the handle supposed to fit in between the two big prongs on the lock?

I'm no expert on this, but the cars I've worked on in the past always had a metal, or plastic clip there. It would connect the Rod to the little metal thing on the key Cylinder

Mind you.......this is a convertible. I haven't used the door locks on my MGB since I had the car. I can count the number of times I've had the roof up on the fingers of one hand. If someone wants to get into your car they will, so just don't leave anything of value in it. A lock on the glove box and one on the trunk are the most important. But you want things to be "right", I can identify with that. The lighter on my daily driver doesn't work which annoys me, and I don't smoke! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yeah. I realize that if someone really wants to get into the car, basically nothing is stopping them. However, I think that door locks would deter someone from stealing it, especially when the top is up. And I too and one of those people who likes for everything to be right and/or working on a car.

The first thing to do is lube the latch assy from inside the door till it locks and unlocks freely.(duh) then install the new cylinder ,and slide the slotted arm over the actuating arm(the one you franticly wiggled up and down to lube up)The cylinder snaps into the door without much effort....you be done........
NOW you can safely leave it UNLOCKED so they dont slash your canvas to gain entry......
Mad dog (been there , done it)

Ah, I see. So that giant wire like thing does fit in between the arms. Thanks MD!

Oh, and I don't have to take the window assembly out or anything else off besides the outside panel to get to this do it? I know the clip has to come off the lock too.
