Door Latch Issue

When I started to clean the door latch mechanisms for my BT7, I noticed the forward control unit has a small pin that is suppose to push up against a detent in the door handle mechanism to insure the handle returns to the proper closed position. On both the left and right sides, the pin had twisted out of position from the vertical slot and wasn't doing anything except making it difficult to open the door. I opened the two halves of the control unit and found the metal around the slot had been worn away by the out-of-position pin.
I assume this is a common failure since the pin location design is not good. But then again, I don't think I've ever seen any posts about this problem or a possible solution so maybe it just my car.
I considered several fixes before settling on a flat headed carriage bolt and self locking nut. I had to widen the vertical slot a bit to get the square portion of the bolt to ride in the slot but it seams to work on the bench. I will install it next week and report back.
Anyone else discover this issue and how did you correct it? Does it even warrant fixing?

Since there have been no replies to my post, I will assume that my car is the only one to have suffered this issue. Or maybe no one else has looked at the front control units close enough to see if the pin has dislodged.
I did install the repaired unit today and it seems to work fine. The pull handle returns to the correct position when released. I'll repair the right hand unit tomorrow since it has the same issue.

Rob,
I haven't problem with door latches but have started another 3000 project where car was completely disassembled by PO.I will reference your post when I get to assembling doors.
thx,
Marv

Rob,
I'm currently assembling the doors and latches on my BT7 and they seem fine. However, this looks like a nice repair if someone has a problem. Thanks!!
